That evening, the heavy oak gates of the old canal lock were finally closed for the night…

Elias, the lock keeper, wiped his hands on his worn canvas apron and walked slowly down the stone steps toward the water…

The late summer air was still and warm, holding onto the last soft light of the day…

He stepped onto his small wooden rowboat, moored tightly against the stone wall of the lock, intending to stow his heavy iron tools…

But there, curled into a tight, prickly ball at the bottom of an old wooden bucket, was a very young hedgehog, fast asleep…

Elias smiled softly, knowing exactly where the little one belonged…

A family of hedgehogs lived just across the quiet canal, nested safely beneath the sprawling roots of the grand weeping willow…

He decided it was time to take the small traveler home before night fully settled over the valley…

He reached into his coat pocket for a match and lit his antique brass lantern…

The warm, golden glow of the lantern immediately bathed the wooden floorboards in a soft, flickering light…

He carefully untied the thick hemp rope from the iron ring, letting the heavy knots fall softly against the damp wood…

Taking his seat at the center of the boat, he gripped the smooth, time-worn handles of the oars…

The crossing was slow and entirely peaceful…

There was only the gentle lapping of the dark water against the wood, and the soft, rhythmic creaking of the metal oarlocks…

The evening air was cooling now, carrying the rich scent of damp earth, mixing beautifully with the sweet, heavy fragrance of wild honeysuckle blooming along the banks…

In his bucket, the tiny hedgehog did not stir, breathing quietly, completely lulled by the slow, steady movement of the oars…

Elias pulled the oars back with a practiced ease, letting them glide just above the surface, then dipped them again into the cool, silent water…

The warm, golden glow of the lantern reflected on the dark, glassy surface of the canal, casting long shadows that danced softly on the tall reeds…

The gentle lapping of the dark water against the wood seemed to whisper a nighttime lullaby to the quiet valley…

Soon, the bow of the rowboat nudged gently against the grassy bank of the opposite side…

Elias stepped out onto the soft earth, moving as quietly as he could…

He lifted the wooden bucket and carried it toward the ancient willow tree…

Finding a thick, soft bed of moss near the deep roots, he laid the bucket carefully on its side…

For a moment, all was still…

Then, the little hedgehog slowly unrolled, its tiny nose twitching as it sniffed the fresh night air…

It took a few hesitant steps, then trotted happily into the tall ferns, where a faint, familiar rustling welcomed it home…

His quiet task complete, Elias returned to his boat and pushed off lightly from the bank…

The slow, steady movement of the oars guided him back across the water, toward his small stone cottage with its ivy-covered walls…

Behind him, the canal settled back into a perfect, undisturbed mirror, reflecting the first silver stars of the night sky…

He tied the hemp rope to the mooring ring one last time, making sure it was secure, then gently blew out the warm, golden glow of the lantern…

A comfortable, deep darkness wrapped around the old stone lock like a soft velvet blanket…

The sounds of the night insects settled, the water faded into a quiet, distant murmur…

And the old lock keeper, just like the peaceful valley around him, drifted smoothly and gently into a deep, restful sleep…
